The novel by Osvalds Zebrs ‘In the Shadow of the Rooster Hill’ is based on the first major shocks the nowadays Latvian nation faces at the end of 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries. The events of that time become a decisive moment in the creation of the Latvian nation, they laid the foundations for the Latvian state. At the forefront of the novel, a serious and completely non-romantic question is raised: what is the path of an individual from an idea of resistance to the victims of a revolution, from an idealistic view upon tomorrow and starting a fight in the interests of society, but arriving at crime and deep despair.
The book was published in the series ‘We. Latvia. XX Century.’ within the framework of the SCCF’s target programme ‘National Identity’.
